5v5 Flag Football Guide
Flag Football Positions
Learn what each player does in 5v5 flag football, from quarterback, center, receiver, and running back on offense to rusher, coverage defender, and safety on defense.
Offense
Quarterback
The quarterback receives the snap, reads the defense, and distributes the football by passing or handing it off when the rules allow. Good quarterbacks communicate clearly, protect the football, and make quick decisions.
Offense
Center
The center starts the play by snapping the ball to the quarterback. Depending on the play and league rules, the center may also release into a route and become a receiver.
Offense
Receiver
Receivers run assigned routes, create separation, and work to get open for the quarterback. They should know their alignment, route depth, and where other receivers are going so the offense maintains spacing.
Offense
Running Back
A running back may line up beside or behind the quarterback and can receive handoffs, short passes, or motion assignments. The role often requires quick changes of direction and good ball security.
Defense
Rusher
The rusher pressures the quarterback after meeting the league's rushing requirements. Rushers should take a controlled path, stay balanced, and work to pull the quarterback's flag without making unnecessary contact.
Defense
Coverage Defender
Coverage defenders are responsible for receivers or areas of the field. They should watch the play develop, communicate with teammates, stay under control, and be ready to pull the flag after a catch.
Defense
Safety
A safety typically lines up deeper and helps protect against longer passes and plays that break through the first level of the defense. The safety should read the quarterback and communicate with teammates.
Player Development
Rotate youth players
Youth players benefit from learning more than one position. Coaches should rotate players when possible so they develop a broader understanding of offense, defense, teamwork, and the overall game.

Build the rest of your flag football foundation
Understanding positions is easier when players also know the basic rules, field structure, and practice fundamentals.
