Player Safety

Flag Football Safety

Practical safety guidance for youth players, parents, and coaches before, during, and after practices and games.

Before Play

Start prepared

  • Use an age appropriate warmup before practices and games.
  • Make sure the field is clear of hazards and equipment is positioned safely.
  • Players should wear their NFL FLAG uniform and flag belt as required for the program.
  • Use appropriate athletic footwear for the playing surface.
  • Bring water and encourage regular hydration breaks.

Technique

Teach safe football habits

  • Reinforce flag pulling instead of tackling or wrapping up players.
  • Teach players to maintain body control and avoid unnecessary contact.
  • Keep hands away from the face and head area.
  • Teach players to slow down near boundaries, other fields, and equipment.
  • Use drills that match the age and experience level of the team.

During Play

Coaches should stay alert

  • Stop play when a player appears injured or is in distress.
  • Do not encourage an injured player to continue playing through pain.
  • Watch for signs of overheating, dehydration, or unusual fatigue.
  • Keep substitutions and sidelines organized so players are clear of active play.
  • Address unsafe or overly aggressive play immediately.

Head Injuries

Take possible concussions seriously

If a player may have suffered a concussion, remove them from play and do not allow a same day return. Parents or guardians should be notified and appropriate medical guidance should be followed.

Culture

Safety is part of sportsmanship

Players should know that protecting themselves and other athletes matters more than winning a single play. Coaches set the tone by teaching control, respect, proper technique, and communication throughout the season.

Stop the play when safety comes first. When something does not look right, coaches should address it before play continues.
